I’ve often wondered what makes a “great blog.” Experts say that content is key; but really… what else besides content makes a blog worth reading? What else might be important for readers to see that will make them want to linger around your blog longer? How do “those” blogs get voted in the “top 50 of…”? While we all have target audiences for our blogs it would be nice if more people that saw your site actually stayed and looked around. Don’t you think?
During a recent discussion with my tribe on Triberr about making changes to a blog so it looks more appealing, I did a major brain dump of things that -in my humble opinion- make a blog worth reading. I subscribe to over 30 blogs that I mostly read daily with very limited time and they are all very different in the topics they cover (not just parenting and food blogs).
Working full time, running a household, and raising my kids means that I have very limited time dedicated to reading blogs and making comments; but I do it and enjoy it. So what makes me stay and read around someone’s blog? Four reasons:
- Good content. Your content must be something I am interested in and written well. I am not talking Wall Street Journal writing skills but decent is very important.
- Easy to read. If you have a dark colored background with a light font it’s probably a no-go for me. I rarely read more than half way through the post without exiting out. I’m sorry, but it’s difficult. If you have a white background with grey font make sure your font is very legible, because otherwise, it’s difficult.
- Easy to navigate. Can I find what I am looking for quickly? How do I contact you? Can I subscribe via email? How many hoops do I need to jump through to make a comment on a post?
- Appears “clean.” Are your sidebars crowded, unaligned, and distracting? While I know many of you monetize your site through sponsors and ads, there are ways to organize them so they don’t look messy.
I am not saying that my blog is perfect. However, I want to create an inviting place for you to read my posted opinions so that hopefully you’ll come back. Here is a quick suggestion to determine if you blog needs fine tuning: pull up your page and stand 2-3 ft back. Could a complete stranger (who doesn’t visit your site often) navigate through your site easily based on the four points above? Are the “buttons” on your sidebars distracting the reader from the post your wrote? If you are unsure that your blog could use some sprucing up; ask a friend for their constructive opinion. I also suggest you pull up your blog on a smart phone to see if someone can read your post. I often click on links shared on twitter on my phone while I am waiting in line (efficiency is key, right?).
Stay tuned for Wednesday’s post. It will give you line item suggestions of little things you can easily do that will make a huge difference. Don’t want to miss it? Way to go Laura !! Glad you shared this post
Just a note .. your post on October squash is linking to this post and not the one below ( through Triberr that is) .. since I clicked on the post. maybe it’s linking to the home page .. not sure.
thanks for letting me know! weird things happen through triberr!
I seriously love your website. I subscribe through email, so I normally don’t come to the site (which you know from my lack of comments–sorry!), but after this post, I had to revisit and see what you were talking about. I LOVE IT. I love the layout, how clean it looks, that there’s an actual bottom to it and doesn’t just go down down down, everything. What’s the etiquette for redesigning your blog (I just had someone do a layout for me a few months ago) with someone new? Because I kind of want to see about your designer.
Er…although she may be out of my prince range……
Really great points Laura!! Uncluttered always gets the most attention. And now that Greta has pointed out how much she loves the bottom of your page, of course I’m going to go back to my blog and obsess about how I don’t have a great footer like yours!
O.M.G. You crack me up!!! there are LOTS of things that are a work in progress on this site. link structure, menu bar… and linking it to MOMables among other things. Thank you for your kind words.
Hey Laura I thought this was a great post I think most bloggers are looking for ways to improve their blog and you had some great tips!
Those are very good points and your blog is lovely. You must be doing it right because Greta tweeted this post and shared it. Which is what brought me here. Above all, it is your readers that make you or break you
Great points. Plus, I hate the blogs that play music! I mean, they are probably really nice, but I alway click away immediately if there is music playing. Never do that. Love your blog!!!
Thanks for visiting Stasha! While I still have some changes to make to my blog (by preference mostly) I am pretty happy with where I am. I read a lot of blogs and I have become picky where I put my time reading while working full time. thank you!
Thank you Cheryl!
Love you site. Thanks for the great recommendations. You have given me a lot to think about on my site…yikes it needs so much work!

Laura your blog hits on all cylinders – it makes the experience a good – non labor intensive journey to gaining something new. May God continue to bless you with wisdom that you so generously share with others. Thanks Friend!
They are just suggestions… and take them one at a time.
I have a to-do list myself on small changes I want to do here. Check out part 2
Thank you Kevin! I always look forward to your next post!
I like your tip about keeping it clean! If I get distracted checking out all of the blog buttons you have, I am NOT reading your blog! Great tips!
